What you'll actually say

Spanish begins the way Spain itself greets you: warmly, and without hurry. Two people who barely know each other will still ask '¿Cómo estás?' — how are you — and actually wait for the answer. Notice one sound that instantly marks you as speaking the Spanish of Spain: the 'c' in 'gracias' and the 'z' in 'plaza' are pronounced like the English 'th' in 'think'. Lean into it — that crisp 'th' is the music of Castilian.
