How long does it really take to learn a language?
The honest answer comes from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute, which has measured how long its diplomats take to reach professional working proficiency — from about 700 class hours for Spanish to 2,200 for Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, or Arabic. Below is the FSI benchmark for all 16 languages Envoy teaches, with a realistic conversational timeline at 30 minutes a day.
The numbers, by language
FSI sorts languages into four difficulty categories for native English speakers. "Hours to professional" is the FSI estimate to reach ILR‑3 (roughly CEFR B2–C1). "Conversational" is our estimate to a solid B1 at a steady 30 minutes a day.

Why the "3 months to fluent" promise is a lie
No credible method reaches professional fluency in a season. Double your daily time and you roughly halve the calendar: an hour a day brings the Category III timeline down from about three years to eighteen months to conversational.
